Nick Ferrio is no stranger to this blog. His previous album, Amongst the Coyotes and Birdsong, was one of my favorite albums of the year, even though it didn’t make it to the top 10 (sorry.) Trust me — it’s worth going back and listening to that one. Soothsayer speaks to Ferrio’s versatility. The album has a strong 70s influence that gives the songs a crispness, even as the subject matter ranges widely.
Soothsayer showcases Ferrio’s vivid imagination. “That’s Not How I Remember It” draws on surprising imagery to illustrate the disconnect between nostalgia and the hollowing out of urban spaces. “Food Court” goes to some surprising places but I won’t spoil it. Ferrio’s talent is shining light into narrow cracks to be sure. The additional horns and synths build these songs into something quite powerful, as if Ferrio’s reality here is garish and candy-colored as it all falls apart.
