I would be most indebted to anyone who can explain why so many Scandinavian musicians perform in English. For a genre that so heavily relies on lyrics, it can be tough to dig into a folk or country song if an indiomatic phrase doesn’t quite translate. But Stockholm’s Della Ridge have it figured out — with music that’s sweet and lonely it transcends any language.
I think there are a few things going for Della Ridge: the violins and steel guitars are treated as part of the music, rather than a novelty. The band also just has some serious charisma. Even as they cover well-tread country tropes (leaving lipstick on a counter, a penchant for whiskey) it sounds brand new. Ultimately, Della Ridge has sincerity, a key ingredient for country music no matter which country you’re from.
