I just spent the day at Coney Island and it’s clear W.C. Beck feels the same way about it as I do. It’s one of the last places in the city that hasn’t been glammed up for Instagram. It’s a good reminder of the past, but it also asks you to wonder how long it can possibly hold out. And then that might lead to some existential thoughts of a personal nature.
Beck establishes a carefree groove early on in the song, but that just makes the questions he’s asking much more poignant. “(Holding On) To a Coast” is ringing true for me personally — that moment where you know you’re too old to be screwing up, but young enough that maybe you can turn things around if only you could figure out how.
