For whatever reason, the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is having a huge moment — probably most prominently in Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Hadestown. Lewin, whose music I’ve written about in the past, has her own entry in the mythos: her new single “Follow Me.” If I didn’t have summer global pandemic brain, I’d investigate it more deeply, but I’d say for the past few years we’ve been living through a sense of grief that the things we knew and loved are slipping through our grasps for arbitrary reasons.
“Follow Me” is an experimental track off her upcoming For the Leaving and the Left Behind, a new chapter in the singer’s career. (She previously performed under the name JARA.) The album explores a cataclysmic breakup and how the people involved pick up their respective pieces.
With shimmering guitars and an insistently driving electric guitar, Lewin quests for answers in a time-honored tale of lovers who try again — but only one is committed to making things work.
