REVIEW: Sarah King — The Hour

Sarah King isn’t here to play. On her new EP, “The Hour,” produced by Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers) and David Baron (The Lumineers), speaks truth to power in 5 impactful songs. King’s got a bent towards gothicana that works well here, providing a simmering soundtrack for righteous comeuppance. The EP doesn’t brood, though. Instead, King’s powerful voice transcends the music, illustrating the strength we all need to persevere.

Sarah told me a little bit more about “Poision.” Here are her own words:

“‘Poison’ was inspired by AOC standing up to a male colleague who accosted her at work. Her strength and choice to confront him instead of remain silent reminded me of women everywhere, every day, dealing with these situations, and wondering what we can do to change them – and realizing that speaking up and speaking out is the first step. Women shouldn’t have to accept these interactions with a smile, and it’s an honor to use my voice to tell this story.”

The song “Nightstand,” which I featured on Episode 157 of the podcast, is a clear standout. It turns the traditional murder ballad on its head and is, in fact, a banger. Check it out below.
