Hi, everyone! Welcome to Episode 166!
My brain is in vacation mode. As you may have seen on Twitter, one of my friends’ parents bought a giant mcmansion on the Hudson River that used to be a bed and breakfast…and it was sold as-is, so all of the kooky decorations are still up. It was fun, and my heart is still in the bedroom decorated like a chamber in a de Medici palace, complete with a bathroom the size of my last apartment. The bathroom has a giant sunset mural in it, because…sure.
Anyway! This episode is going to be like a hybrid of the current format and the new format. I dug deep into my record crates, and by that I mean my hard drive, to bring you the best of music that’s new and the best of what’s in Adobe & Teardrops’ vast archives.
We’re going to start the set off with Dallas Moore. His album The Rain is full of songs that would easily fall under outlaw country, though the songs have a relentless optimism to them. So I thought I’d bring it down a bit with I Can Lick Any Son of a Bitch in the House because, well, you can’t be too happy. We’ll start with Dallas Moore’s “Blue Jean Jesus,” Patreon subscribers will listen to “Better Days.” Then we’ll listen to I Can Lick Any SOB’s “It Don’t Get Much Better Than This” off of Mayberry — Patreon subscribers will get to hear “Break All Your Strings.”
- Dallas Moore — “Blue Jean Jesus” (The Rain) (2:21)
- I Can Lick Any Son Of a Bitch in the House — “It Don’t Get Much Better Than This” (Mayberry) (5:56)
- The Roseline — “Seven Hundred Second Chances” (Single) (8:45)
(12:29) We closed that set out with a new one by The Roseline: “Seven Hundred Second Chances.”
Coming up, some of the best in Southern power pop. We’ll kick it off with The Blips, a sort of Birmingham supergroup. You can hear how much fun they’re having playing around with vintage sounds. “Gold Rush” is fast and loose, and the song Patreon subscribes will listen to, “Yes Yes No Yes Yes No” is as much fun to listen to as it is to say outloud.
- The Blips — “Gold Rush” (The Blips) (13:03)
- The District Attorneys — “Boomtown” (Slowburner) (16:16)
- The Pollies — “You Want It” (Transmissions) (19:23)
(21:49) After The Blips I took you back to 2012 with the District Attorneys and the album Slowburner. You heard “Boomtown” and Patreon subscribers vibed with “Here’s Your Start.” I don’t think I’ve listened to this since 2013 or something. Damn, it’s good. These songs are going to be stuck in my head for the next 3 years, I swear. It was truly impossible to pick just two songs, so I’ll definitely have to get them back on the podcast as soon as I can! As an aside, Frank Keith IV played on bass for the band. He now holds it down for Great Peacock, and is also a publicist for Sweetheart PR!
I closed the set with The Pollies and their most recent album Transmissions from 2018, though they released an album of live acoustic songs of their greatest hits this past year called Live From the Guest Bedroom. Lots of great songs from the album, but I played “You Want It” to keep in line with the theme of the other two song titles.
This is one of the last SubmitHub grab bags I’ll be doing for a while so let’s get weird with it! We’ll start with June Star, a band out of Baltimore, and their song “Seven Pieces.” I love how it sounds like something out of the mid ‘90s.
- June Star — “Seven Pieces” (Single) (23:06)
- Ryan Barry — “Desert Son” (Moonlight) (26:45)
- Jeremy Parsons — “Something Other Than You Are” (Things to Come) (30:24)
(34:00) We got jazzy with the Ryan Barry Quintet. The song is “Desert Son” from the EP Moonlight. Then we cruised along to Texas singer-songwriter Jeremy Parsons gorgeous meditation, “Something Other Than You Are” off his recent album Things to Come.
We’ll end the show with my interview with Mackenzie Shivers about her new album Rejection Letters. To get the full conversation, read the interview on Adobe & Teardrops! In this excerpt, we discuss the songs “Martha’s Vineyard” and “Kids.”
- Martha’s Vineyard
- Kids
