We’ve been watching a lot of Halt and Catch Fire, a period drama about a tech startup in Texas in the 80s. The soundtrack is rife with punk, New Wave, and heavy synth music. Honestly, it sounds a lot like Swiss quartet Annie Taylor has been diving deep into that soundtrack. The sinewy single “The Fool” brings all the best of the area into a simultaneously menacing and dispassionate composition of heartbreak and wrath.
Annie Taylor is riding high off their 2020 release Not Yours! They’re hoping magic strikes twice with their upcoming album Sweet Mortality. We get a taste of it with the split single of “The Fool” and “Sweet Mortality.”
“For me, “The Fool” is definitely the most meaningful song on the record,” frontperson Gini Jungi notes. “I wrote it with great heartbreak and remember even shedding a few tears when I first played it on my guitar. It’s about longing for someone’s love and how you catch yourself always spinning aimlessly in circles, making a ‘fool’ of yourself.”
