Don’t get your hopes up, but don’t give up either. On “Back Here on This Throne,” Cory Grinder & The Playboy Scouts are the kings of ambivalence. The song has a decidedly aloof feel, thanks to its muted, swinging beat and slow burn of a lead guitar track. “Back Here on This Throne” gets at that deliciously glum feeling when you’re into someone, but they’re just not feeling the same way, or maybe sometimes they are? It’s messy, but the Scouts make it seem like the coolest emotional space to be.
The band formed in Cleveland in 2016 and released their debut album Cahoots And Other Favorites in the Fall of 2018. Since then, the band has taken to the road and toured through Nashville, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Chicago, Texas, North Carolina, Detroit, and more. From dance halls to bar gigs, the Playboy Scouts can reign it in and bust it out.
In 2020, despite multiple national tours being cancelled for the band, a five song EP “Good Boy” was put out in May as a teaser for the release of this year’s Honky Tonkin’ Beauty Supreme. Cory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts have signed to Cleveland record label, Blue Arrow Records, and will be releasing their new record on June 11th.
“This song is about unrequited love and a refusal to give up,” Cory explains. “But perhaps even when you get what you want, you know it will be short lived. We used a twelve string electric guitar to give it a cool, California country vibe.”
