From sailor to singer, Lawrence Maxwell’s got a whole range of stories that are fit for country music. If nothing else, his voice is vintage country, as I’ve been writing for some time. Maxwell is prepping his third studio album, Almost Natural, and we’ve finally got the first single off of it. With some hotshot drumming and a bridge that will beckon you to the depths of the sea, the song is a fun romp through the wilderness — and nostalgia for the wild places we used to go.
With arrangements that pay homage to traditional bluegrass, we see Cape Breton’s own, Mairi Rankin and her Celtic-style fiddle trading licks with Josh Langille’s country guitar as Maxwell’svocals paint a picture of Cape Breton’s wondrous landscapes.
“I feel like now is the right time to release this song,” Maxwell says about the track that was not initially intended on becoming a single. “Sometimes you have a plan but the world has a plan of its own, and you need to be able to switch things up on the fly.”
