Caroline Keller Band Puts on A “Smokeshow”

Caroline Keller Band are storytellers at heart. Caroline has been pursuing her dream of being a Country music artist from a very early age. She made a name for herself as a Country Gospel singer starting when she was sixteen. She recorded three albums and topped the Country Gospel charts, with four songs ranked in the top ten.

Caroline has paired with fellow songwriters and touring musicians Scott Spruill, John Christenbury and Clint Presley forming the “Caroline Keller Band.” The band, at its core, are four friends that have music running through their veins. They are adventurers, coffee drinkers, and lovers of traditional country music. Their sound has been described as “Traditional Country with an Americana flair”.

In the summer of 2016 they were invited to be a part of the Sunday night writers nights at the Bluebird café and have since been making quarterly appearances. They were awarded the 2017 Don Gibson Singer Songwriter Symposium award with their song “The Way It Goes” as well as 2019 Queen City Country Female Artist of the Year and 2018 Carolina Music Award Best Americana Band.

The band says their main goal with their songwriting is to be authentic: authentic to themselves and authentic to their audience. Strong songwriting and musical prowess brings the songs to life whether it is in a small, intimate venue or on one of the many larger stages that the band has performed on during its career.

Sometimes, that authenticity leans itself to parties. On “Smokeshow,” the band puts on a party to wish a ne’er do well lover on their way. Caroline wrote to us about her songwriting process and what she loves most about playing out live.

Do you start off with the music or lyrics first? Why?
I would say that our songwriting process doesn’t always have the music or the lyrics before the other. A lot of times we will be swapping stories and someone in the room will say a line or a phrase that jumpstarts an entire song. Other times, someone is playing the guitar or keys in the background and a specific melody or hook will jump out and really get the process rolling.

Do you have any songwriting tips you can share?

The number one thing that we always focus on is telling a story as open and honestly as we can. Sometimes it isn’t our story and that’s ok. A tip I would give is to never be afraid to be honest in your writing. You never know who it might help when they hear it!

What have you missed about touring?
There are so many things we miss but I think one thing that we miss most about it is the ability to meet so many new people and share our music with them.

How do you kill long hours in the van?
Our typical long road trip usually consists of the most RANDOM playlist you’ve ever heard. We often fill the time jumping from one song to the other sharing stories of the moment in our lives that the music brings us back to.
