If you’re wondering where the next generation of Americana singer-songwriters is coming from, look no further than Woodstock, Alabama. Drayton Farley has proven over the last year or so that he’s a lyricist who can hang with the best of them: I played a few songs from his first album Sweet Southern Sadness on Episode 140 of the podcast back in October, but Farley had the one-two punch ready with his followup Stoic Faces in February (also featured on the podcast.) With his new single “Chewing On Fire,” Farley is rapidly tightening up his songs and it’s easy to see that he’s going to break out sooner rather than later.
Whereas Farley’s repertoire focuses on character studies, with the pain of dreams denied in the rural South, “Chewing on Fire” turns inward. Here, Farley takes to some tried-and-true picking to reveal his regret as he considers his past, and wondering what his future holds.
