REVIEW: Just Roxie (nee Roxie Watson) Pare Down 3-Part Harmonies, 3 Chords, to the Truth

We Missed You is more than a pandemic album. It’s also a re-introduction, as Roxie Watson reinvents itself as the trio Just Roxie. Boasting the talents of Lenny Lasseter, Becky Shaw, and Linda Bolley, the trio is brimming with talent and chemistry — something in abundance in the band’s previous albums.

I can’t say much has changed: it’s hard to improve on the band’s formula of skillful playing, intricate harmonies, and songwriting so precise and plainspoken that you’ll have trouble separating the originals from Just Roxie’s repertoire of traditional bluegrass and country.

Unlike their more traditional forebears, Just Roxie’s songs are imbued with a sense of optimism, kindness, and forgiveness — and almost Buddhist approach to bluegrass. “Walk On” is a gentle breakup song, mourning the missed opportunity to make things right, and accepting one’s own responsibility in that final altercation.

“Hello Again,” meanwhile, confronts a topic too-often ignored in American songwriting: friendship. The album was recorded the weekend Georgia went into lockdown, but after 2 years and counting of isolation, the idea of mending friendships is a meaningful one.

Of course, there’s also songs like “I’m Gonna Sleep With One Open,” a honky-tonker about infidelity and revenge featuring Lasseter’s distinctive bass and trademark mischievous humor.

So take a gentle ride with Just Roxie — we could all use some comfort right now. You can purchase or stream the full album here.
