Formerly known as Gracia Harrison, Gracia is an American country singer songwriter. Seen by some on NBC’s hit television show, the Voice, Gracia has spent years since perfecting her craft.
Her latest single, “run,” is the kind of pitch-perfect country storytelling we all crave. Gracia deftly contrasts the highs and lows of living life unattached, knowing it’s unhealthy but ambivalent about change. Catchy song, complex storytelling: what more do you need?
In our interview, Gracia describes how she captures the perfect vibe.
Do you try to make the most of being in a city, or do you prefer to just rest up?
I defiiiinitely am the farthest thing from the Energizer Bunny, but I love traveling to new places, so any chance I get to have a second of free time in a new city, I’m seeing everything I possibly can. I can sleep when I get back home!
Name a perfect song and tell us why you feel that way.
Honestly, right now it’s this one. I think when we wrote this, I put a lot of emotion in to it about myself, and it’s so relatable to me, so listening to it, I just feel like I put myself and my emotions and feelings in to a song. Aside from that little humble brag (haha), I think one song I’ll never get tired of is “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift. It has SO much emotion, lyrical imagery, and details to it that you really feel like even if you haven’t had that exact experience, you’ve experienced it. Which, I think makes it an exceptional song.
Who are some of your musical influences?
I have a super wide variety of artists I look up to, and all for different reasons. Within my own genre and similar vibes to myself and who I want to be, I love Kelsea Ballerini, Ingrid Andress, Shania Twain, Dolly Parton (not so much the same vibe, but her in general as a person. She’s so unapologetic, but loving and just beautiful inside and out), and Sam Hunt. Outside of my own genre, I really look up to Lady Gaga for her ability to be such a chameleon, and overall vibe. I also love Halsey.
Who would you love to collaborate with? Why?
Definitely either Sam Hunt, or Shania Twain. Or Ingrid Andress. Sam, because his lyrics are always so great, and I really love his vibe musically. Ingrid, because I think my own vibe lyrically is similar, and I have the same kind of love for the sad girl vibe, so I think it would be a great collab. Shania, because she’s literally the queen of pop country music, and I grew up listening to her.
Do you have any songwriting tips you can share?
I have 0 method to the madness when it comes to writing, but, I truly think what makes a song great is 1) the melody, and 2) imagery, emotions, and details. I think especially these days, people are latching on more and more to songs that are written from the heart, and true experiences/feelings. So for me, I think some of my best songs have been things that I wrote about my own experiences and thoughts, because you can truly put so much more in to them, and it really does carry more weight. People can feel it.
