Matt Williams Brings on Country With an Emo Sound

An emerging Red Dirt/Texas Country artist from Stillwater, OK, Matt has opened for Dylan Wheeler and other Texas country powerhouses. The lead single from an upcoming EP, “Always Be Around” draws its inspiration from that post-breakup feeling of “You and I both know you can’t get me out of your head”. Loud guitars and a pulsating rhythm create a head-bob worthy chorus, while the verses let the song breath and give context to the emotions of the song.

Williams refers to himself as a Red Dirt artist, but “Always Be Around” screams “late-90s Southern emo” to me, with its Hoobastank-worthy harmonies and tasty hooks. That’s not a bad thing — perhaps it’s the amalgamation of country music and my preferred type of music.

I think Matt meant to send me a few more response to interview questions, but I’ve got these two — so here’s a fun way to get to know him.

Recent release you cannot stop listening to?

I have been listening to Kody West’s new song “Circles” on repeat it seems like. I have also been listening the band Plush’s new self-titled album, it’s great.

What are some of the best venues you’ve played? Why?

The Majestic in Fort Smith, AR is one of my favorite venues to play. They have an awesome green room and really take care of the artist. Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, TX is another that I really enjoyed. There was a great crowd that night.
