HEY! LISTEN: Christopher Volat Winds Through “The Maze”

Swedish singer-songwriter Christopher Volat is not in a rush. His song “The Maze” is an unhurried composition, depicting the twists and turns of an emotional crisis with compassion and sincerity. Volat’s deep, gravelly voice contrasts with his light fingerpicking, while an omnipresent cello provides emotional weight and a sense of foreboding — but also, perhaps, the thread of hope to guide us out of the maze.

Do you start with music or lyrics first?

I always start with the lyrics. I feel it´s the role of the music to back the words. At least in my case. My literary interest is strong.

How do you balance having a good time at shows and staying sharp?

When it comes to having a good time at shows, it´s to remember that, to really be in the words, sing true and connect to people. The rest comes easy then.

What was your favorite show?

My favorite shows is when this [connection] happens. No matter the venue. But I guess one show stands out. I played at a venue called KoM here in Gothenburg. You could hear a pin fall throughout the whole thing. Perfect sound and perfect mood in the best part of town. Many friends present. Thinking about releasing it as a live album.

Do you play covers at shows? Why or why not?

I don´t mind a cover or two. Depending on the mood and situation. Really like the old outlaw country stuff. Cash, Jennings and Nelson. I´m always an explorer.
