Explain the title of your single?
I went on a road trip through New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, and North Carolina and fell in love with the music and culture. The cities seem to be revolved completely around music with people playing everywhere from the big venues, to the dive bars, to the streets. I had some crazy adventures and spent every night in smoky music clubs drinking whiskey feeling like I had gone back in time. I even recorded a song at the iconic Sun Studios in Memphis. It was incredible. I found a new sense of self and what felt like a second home in these places – hence the name, “Home Again!”
Tell us about the first song you wrote.
I was in college in Boston and didn’t realize how down I was until I wrote my first song called “Last Year.” The funny thing about it was even though the lyrics were pretty depressing and it revealed my emotional state, I finally felt a weight lifted. It made me feel so much better and lighter and I kind of knew right then that this is what I needed to be doing with my life. Finding your own way to express yourself is everything!
Do you have any songwriting tips you can share?
The only thing that I really stick by is getting that pen to paper everyday. I think the more disciplined you are, the more the ideas will come. Getting that hit of inspiration is the best high ever but unfortunately it doesn’t come whenever you want it to. I like to keep writing through my thoughts so that when the spark does come, I’m extra prepared.
Do you start off with the music or lyrics first? Why?
Usually a melody and an idea pops up in my head at the same time and then it kinda takes its own direction from there. For this song in particular, I wrote out all the lyrics in 30 minutes (which never happens!) and then the melody followed. This is why I like going to new places – so much inspiration everywhere.
Who mwould you love to collaborate with? why?
I would love to collaborate with The Highwomen. If you don’t know them listen to their album it’s incredible! They are a supergroup consisting of Brandi Carlile, Marren Morris, Natalie Hemby & Amanda Shire and they always invite different female artists on stage with them to sing all sorts of empowering anthems. It would be a dream to be involved in their community.
