Nashville’s Deathcruiser – the moniker of songwriter + Grizfolk vocalist Adam Roth – has shared his powerful new single “Superman” on the 5-year anniversary of his sobriety from alcohol. The track is available to stream now on all DSPs worldwide. “Superman’s” lyrics touch on Adam’s experience of upholding a public facade of being “OK” when, underneath it all, he was slowly dying inside. The song also speaks to the stigma surrounding alcoholism and drug abuse that prevents you from asking for help and the importance of knocking down the internal walls of shame in order to save your life.
“I believe that we should normalize the process of asking for help, so if this song supports one person struggling with addiction, then I consider it a success,” says Roth.
“Superman” finds Deathcruiser with a new sense of vulnerability. The band’s shown that they can write a pop song like nobody else, but this acoustic, more mellow, approach showcases Roth’s storytelling. The song unfolds gently, as Roth expresses his doubts — and optimism that it might stick this time. Like vintage Better Than Ezra, Deathcruiser mixes sweet melodies with bitter lyrics, celebrating the complexity of a life where two things can be true at the same time.
