Rose Gerber’s upcoming EP Memories Someday will force you to sit up and pay attention. The Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter has a commanding voice, soulful and world-weary, bubbling with grace and compassion. The ’70s Southern Rock-tinged grooves on Memories Someday provide an intriguing sandpaper grit to contrast Gerber’s impassioned performance, drawing comparisons to Gillian Welch and Patty Griffin. These songs are as heart-on-your-sleeve as they get, and Gerber’s earnestness leads to true Americana brilliance.
These are songs that reflect on the impermanence of life — how one we can be present in one moment, only to ask ourselves “remember when” seemingly moments later. How do you hold on to the ride? How do you enjoy it? Can you even do that when there’s so much weighing you down? Gerber and her band wrestle with these weighty questions amidst driving grooves and a stunning self-assured swagger. In my opinion, this is one of the finest — and tightest — collections of songs I’ve heard all year.
“I’ve always seen songwriting as my therapy,” explains Gerber. “Some songs are inspired by dreams I’ve had while others tend to creep into my head while driving. The songs I wrote for this EP deal in impermanence and perseverance, reminders to focus on what matters most and push through the hard stuff during our short stays on the earth. Most of them were written in the depths of the pandemic and continue to ring true for me as the world continues to be a heavy place.”
You can listen to the full EP below, exclusively on Adobe & Teardrops.
