I didn’t even have to listen to this song to know I wanted to call it to your attention. Wendy Moten, whom I interviewed for the Nashville Scene, is a vocal powerhouse and jack-of-all trades. Stephanie Urbina Jones knows how to bring it with her vivacious Chicana-inspired country music. Combining these two forces is a sure bet for musical lightning to strike.
And I am not wrong? Urbina Jones unleashes her Honky Tonk Mariachi band rip through a gender-flipped version of “Rhinestone Cowboy” with aplomb, Moten’s spiritual intensity upping the ante. This isn’t just a song about making it int he big city: it’s one celebrating the triumph of a new start and the certainty that there’s only greater things to come.
Stephanie Urbina Jones and the Honky-Tonk Mariachi will be touring Texas and Tennessee, with a stop at the Grand Ole Opry, this fall.
