After 20 years of writing songs, Emmy Woods has hitched herself to a full band with the Red Pine Ramblers. The Minneapolis band sounds as comfortable as any road warriors on the gentle folk rock love song “Crooked Brim.”

The pedal steel wryly echoes Woods’ protestations at a new love rising on the horizon. Woods likens love to a game she’d prefer to ignore, but the infectious mood of her band suggests otherwise — when it happens, it happens, and there’s no point stopping it. Wood herself takes up the mantle of country divas of yore, asserting their agency while wielding a twang that could crack a windshield (complimentary.) This is honky tonk at its finest, so give it a listen.
