HEY! LISTEN: Kaia Kater Flips Intangibles Inside-Out on “The Internet”

Kaia Kater has a knack for weaving the traditional with the boldly modern. “The Internet,” her first single released via Free Dirt Records, is a perfect expression of her interests. Kater questions her relationship with the medium, questioning its physical presence in all our lives even though it’s not something you can see and touch. Kater’s forceful banjo picking almost feels like the weft and warp of a tapestry, illustrating the feeling that the Internet is a blanket — comforting, constricting, and everything in between.

Grenadian-Canadian Kaia Kater’s jazz-fueled voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from NPR, Rolling Stone and No Depression. On ‘Grenades’ (2018), Kaia leaned into a wide array of topics, notably her Caribbean ancestry. Recent projects include “Parallels” (2021) and songwriting for ‘The Porter’ (CBC/BET+) TV series, for which she won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song. She is currently readying an album for release in 2024.

You can learn more about the song from Kater’s interview on CBC Q with Tom Power, at minute 35.

Kater’s next album is expected later this year.
