Nashville-based Sarah Gargano breaks up with a dream — living in London — on her new single “staring at the screen.” The song lives comfortably in the space between indie rock and folk popularized by boygenius and its members, and “staring at the screen” is right at home in those tales of heartbreak. Against a backdrop of pounding distorted guitars, Gargano bids farewell to the people and places she called home.
“The song uses a relationship as a metaphor for saying goodbye to London,” explains Gargano. “Last year I was deported from the UK, detained in the airport for sixteen hours, and I am not allowed to enter the country. Living in London had been a big dream for me for many years and it’s heartbreaking to let go of a dream – especially in such a dramatic way. Sometimes breaking up with a city, and all the things you associate with it, can feel a lot more painful than breaking up with a person and I think a lot of people have had to, to some level, feel the bitter-sweetness of moving away even when they’re really excited to move.”
Sarah Gargano is a 26-year-old singer-songwriter born and raised in NYC, now based in Nashville. Sarah has been writing since she was fifteen and released her first EP in 2018.
