Americana is finding all kinds of commercial “traction” (as they say in the industry) by featuring all kinds of expansive interpretations of American roots music. But, at the end of the day, Americana is barroom rock, and Richmond, VA’s Lowbirds have held that tradition dear. I’ve been a fan of the band since their self-titled EP came out a couple years ago. This time around, the Lowbirds are playing to their strengths on their new EP, “A Few Years In.”
After ten years of immersing myself in Americana, I can honestly say I’ve had a hard time finding a love song that’s sweet but not sappy, heartfelt but not unqualified (so many “I’m a damaged man but I’ll do my best” songs — this is a real thing but also please consider therapy!) On “A Few Years In,” Lowbirds aren’t afraid to put it all on their sleeve: optimism, commitment, and even a roadmap to a happy ending.
