A songwriter’s songwriter, Riley Moore is inspired by a life of adventures like walking an entire 1600 mile tour on foot and living on a sailboat on a lake in the middle of his hometown of Nashville. His debut Album Vagrant was premiered by Billboard Magazine in July 2018. His writing often draws comparisons to Bob Dylan and John Prine.
On his new release, The Tom T Sessions, Moore reflects on his friendship with the late great Tom T. Hall, who, if you don’t know, very likely wrote your favorite 90s country song.
In our interview, Moore talks about his friendship with Hall and reading Pride and Prejudice at the gym.
Who are some of your musical influences?
Bob Dylan, John Prine, Taylor Swift, Doc Watson, Guy Clark, The National, Adrianne Lenker, Shel Silverstein
Name a perfect song and tell us why you feel that way.
“White Roses” by Flyte. It’s simple and beautiful. I’m not musically smart enough to really be able to describe what makes it perfect, but it is perfect. It has it all. The production, the harmonies, the pacing. It’s so nice! Give it a listen!
Explain the title of your album.
The late country star, Tom T. Hall had become a friend of mine over the past few years. He was very kind to me and it was such an honor to get to know him and talk about songwriting, touring and life. He remarked to me once after we shared stories about life on the road that he felt like we were “birds of a feather,” and told me I should write a song with that title. I’d been working on a song inspired by him for a while and after I heard the news of his passing, I decided to finish the song and dedicate a session of songs to his memory.
What do you think you could do to make your music or shows more accessible to a more diverse audience?
I want my shows to feel accessible and welcoming to everyone. I’m very excited to have a tour coming up with two wonderful queer musicians–Rae Isla and Elizabeth Wyld! I feel lucky and honored to get to play a handful of nights with such talented artists and hang with crowds that hopefully are a bit more diverse than some of my other shows. Yippee!
How do you manage having a good time at shows, but also trying to stay mentally and physically fit?
One of my favorite ways to get to know the ins and outs of a city on tour is going for runs in the morning! I love trying local coffee shops too so I usually run to a cafe a mile or so away, then have a leisurely walk back while sipping on some ‘spro. Also, I got the Planet Fitness Black card membership so I can hit the gym (and the shower) pretty much anywhere in the country. I’m not always disciplined enough to work out before shows but when I do it makes me feel very mentally and physically focused and prepared. Also–you can read Pride and Prejudice in 10 minute increments on their built in spa entertainment system while getting a massage!
The Tom T Sessions will be out on September 24th
