If you’ve been watching Russian Doll, this is the track for you. Anna Volpe (who has struck out on her own from the Paisley Fields) has been steadily working towards a solo album, combining the best of indie pop with indie folk. However, on her cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” Volpe makes a powerful pivot.
Volpe gives the song a sort of darkwave treatment — her voice shines clear through ominous synths and glitchy strings. For me, this gives the song a resiliency and optimism that isn’t found in the original. Volpe writes, “Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” has always been one of my
favorite songs and to this day every time I hear it I just visualize
that iconic scene in the Breakfast Club in my head. However, I wanted
to take a different approach with my version to really highlight the
power behind the lyrics.” We can expect more from Volpe in the future, who working on this song became “a catalyst that has taken me on this new musical path.”
