Inspired by the heartbreak of a miscarriage, “A Cautionary Tale” is a multi-layered lullaby from the Hudson Valley’s Mackenzie Shivers. We’ve spoken with Shivers in the past about her thoughtful approach to her work, and it’s no different here.
While “A Cautionary Tale” is replete with electronic elements, the song is, at heart, human. The drums and piano swell to create something warm and pulsating, like the steady breath of a person holding you close. Shivers’ arresting voice won’t let you zone out on this one, as comforting as it is. If anything, she grabs you like a bear hug, prying you from cycles of self-recrimination.
“A Cautionary Tale” is the first song from Shivers’ upcoming album Primrose Was in Season, which will be released in 2024.
