Tulsa-based singer-songwriter Casii Stephan raises her voice to protest against institutional racism on her new song “Law & Order.” She’s joined by Adobe & Teardrops favorite Crys Matthews and producer Jay Burgess to deliver commentary on the unique politics of the South.
“We say we’ve progressed and in many ways we have,” Stephan explains. “At the same time, racial slurs shouted from cars and pickup trucks just because they can isn’t abnormal. And that’s not even getting into how our justice system is skewed, bent, and twisted. It seems we keep singing the same song in new ways over and over again. In the middle of 2021, I started writing this song. Then in 2023, I met Jay and Crys and asked them if they would write their perspective about their respective states. This is Law & Order. To those fighting to make our justice system more just and less racist, thank you.”
Burgess, Stephan, and Matthews trade verses before forming a mighty chorus. Below, Stephan checks in to tell us more about her hopes as an artist.
Name a perfect song and tell us why you feel that way.
“I Want to Dance with Somebody.” It’s pop. And even if someone hates pop, they still love that song. And that’s the power of a great pop song.
Whom would you love to collaborate with? why?
Hans Zimmer. I keep saying it and I will keep saying it until it happens. I’m in my delulu phase.
Do you play covers at your shows? Why or why not?
I do. Because you’re introducing people to you as an artist and a cover gives them an entry point when they don’t know your original songs.
How are you using your platform to support marginalized people?
If I have a chance to share the stage with someone. I love to support women and BIPOC and LGBTQIA! when possible.
Is there a professional “bucket list” item you would love to check off?
I would love to open for someone on a major tour. That’s my next item to check off.
