From the first fragile notes, I knew that “Duality” was going to capture me. An intertwining of an oboe (I think? I know it’s a reed instrument and I’m no jazz expert) and NTHNL’s flute (pictured below), “Duality” is fragile and searing. Something about that first instrument’s brassiness reminds me of the shofar, timid and brave and bold and commanding and all too human, even as it makes its triumphant proclamation. On “Duality,” we get all of that.
NTHNL (pronounced Nathaniel) is the moniker of Jake Rudin, a Brooklyn-based composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and instrument-maker who crafts elaborate worlds from both familiar and unfamiliar sounds to produce unique indie-electronic music.
