Joel Schwelling has quietly but consistently put out carefully-observed Americana with a melancholy tinge — just the way we like it over here. His new single, “Big Wonderful Thing,” is a return to form from Schwelling’s (delightful) garage rock experiments. Here, Schwelling confronts existential horror even as he concedes that, sometimes, it all works out.
“It’s a pandemic-fueled look at the mysteries of life with a good beat and you can dance to,” Schwelling writes. “I usually write with others for others. But when the world shut down in March 2020, I retreated to my studio and started writing, recording and mixing songs for myself. Some of my favorite records are by artists flying completely solo…McCartney’s first album, Todd Rundgren’s early solo albums, Stevie Wonder and others. I’ve also been exploring my earliest musical influences…Beatles, Stones, Animals and the whole British Invasion, folk-rock like the Byrds and Dylan. And straight ahead country and folk. You can hear the culmination of all this on my latest single ‘Big Wonderful Thing.’ It’s got nods to folk-rock, the British invasion and what we’ve all experienced over the past year or so.”
