HEY! LISTEN: Cupid and the Cowboy Revive Scrappy Cowpunk

When Maynard lived in Reno, Nevada, he played at dive bars (including the acclaimed Shae’s Tavern) until he moved to New York City in 2019. That was where he hit the stages and met Cupid at an Open Mic in Brooklyn. He spent a year trying to coax her to sing on his songs and when they finally began recording at a friend’s studio, Maynard was blown away by her talent and charm. Maynard has been searching for a certain type of music and when he couldn’t find it decided to make it himself. Presently they are finishing up their first album.  Thus, Cupid and the Cowboy was formed—all amidst the pandemic.

“Left Me All,” the pair’s latest single, is a scrappy cowpunk boot-kicker with a psychedelic flair thrown in. Cupid and Maynard’s chemistry is undeniable, a gentle harmony that contrasts to the hard guitar licks and thrumming drum line.

What’s on your bucket list?

Cupid would like to start a Songwriter’s Circle for songwriters of all levels. It would serve as a musical community, and a way for musicians to listen to each other and develop their skills.

Recent release can’t stop listening to.

Maynard answers this on with Orville Peck’s stunning new release called “Bronco”

What albums do you listen to in the van?

Maynard: We drive an old truck with a cassette player — go-to cassettes especially before a gig follow as thus: Bo Diddley, Link Ray, Hank Williams and Social Distortion.

Music or lyrics first?

Cupid: Depends! Sometimes song lyrics come to me first, especially out of conversations that I hear walking around NYC. Melodies usually come to me in dreams.

Have you been given something remarkable by a fan?

Recently, a fan posted our latest video on his Facebook wall, with his analysis of its themes. This post ended up being his last post before he passed away. We consider his thoughts as a gift, of sorts. We are heartbroken, but we are also grateful for his consideration of us and our music.
